Viewers will see Ronnie, played by Samantha Womack, 38, lose her newborn child to cot death on New Year's Eve.
As everyone counts down to 2011 in Albert Square, she will sneak into The Queen Vic to secretly switch her dead baby with Kat Moon's (Jessie Wallace, 39) newborn child.
'When Ronnie loses the one thing she's always wanted she acts on impulse in a moment of sheer desperation,' says EastEnders executive producer Bryan Kirkwood.
'We're lucky to have two wonderful actresses who understand the need to portray this subject sensitively.'
EastEnders bosses hope the storyline will raise awareness of cot deaths.
'We are very grateful for their accurate depiction of the devastating effect the sudden death of an infant can have on a family,' Joyce Epstein, of cot death charity FSID, tells the Daily Mirror.
The other big EastEnders plot over Christmas will be the exit of Stacey Branning, played by Lacey Turner.
